Research Associate – Community Partnership Coordinator

she/her

Katrina is a research associate with a background in ecological monitoring and community engagement. She was hired under a four-year Canada Nature Fund for Aquatic Species at Risk (CNFASAR) grant submitted in partnership between NinDaaWaabJig and Healthy Headwaters Lab. NinDaaWaabJig is the Natural Heritage Centre of Walpole Island First Nation, or Bkejwanong, meaning ‘where the waters divide.’

Together with a core team, Katrina is helping coordinate aquatic restoration efforts and community engagement activities related to the grant. Grant activities are guided by community-input, are connected to the youth environmental leadership program (Bkejwanong Eco-keepers), and strive to contribute toward long-term sustainability goals.

Through the Indigenous Knowledge Circle (IKC), Katrina is connected to other Indigenous scientists and knowledge holders, as well as allies working alongside Indigenous communities. The circle comes together to share stories, insights and events, and to contribute toward the goal of decolonizing science and supporting Indigenous capacity-building.
