Honour diversity in science with Asian Canadian Heritage month
When it comes to healthy ecosystems, a diversity of species and functions are desired and needed to ensure vibrant, thriving communities. The same goes for science and science teams. The data are clear: science and society benefit from diverse views and expertise, and yet the science system has a long way to go before realizing the full potential and leveraging it. Our lab is a global one with multiple backgrounds, abilities and skills being represented in our team and work. For example, our lab’s PI Catherine was born in the Philippines, has previously lived and worked around the Pacific Ocean, and is a proud multi-hyphenate Canadian and Filipina/x (who has at one point called Aotearoa New Zealand and USA home). As we conclude Asian Heritage month here in Canada, and, Asian Pacific American month in the USA, the Healthy Headwater Lab wishes to acknowledge our continued support for diversity in all its’ forms as part of science teams and community partnerships, and as part of our globally-connected community.
Did you know that Canada launched the Dimensions Charter and commitment to fostering EDI as a pathway for research excellence, innovation and creativity within and across all disciplines and institutions? The University of Windsor is a signatory of this Charter, along with many schools across the country.
