Call for Postdoc Applicants

Postdoctoral Research Associate Position Available

The Healthy Headwaters Lab and Bioline Corporation (www.bioline.ca) have partnered to provide a unique training and leadership opportunity for a Postdoctoral Associate focusing on carbon characterization of humic substances.  The successful candidate will work jointly between the University of Windsor and Bioline to explore and characterize the properties of humic and fulvic acids used for application in agricultural settings. Funding for this position is made possible through Bioline Corporation and MITACS Canada’s Accelerate Grant Program. 

The candidate will join Dr. Catherine Febria’s research group at the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research and have full access to a range of analytical equipment to lead industry-relevant research on humic substances. They will also engage in the applications of this research to agricultural landscapes while also building professional networks and mentoring students.   

 Qualifications 

  • PhD in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Geochemistry or similar disciplines within the past 5 years 

  • Technical research experience related to: 

  • Knowledge in organic chemistry and specifically dissolved organic matter properties and dynamics in natural environments 

  • Analytical skills including spectrofluorometry (e.g., Horiba Aqualog machine) and nutrient analyses (e.g., SmartChem, Shimadzu TOC-N analysers) 

  • Experience setting up and running experiments involving humic substances (e.g., ion exchange columns) 

  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively and with minimal day-to-day supervision 

  • Quantitative statistical analysis using R software  

  • Relational experience related to: 

  • Industry, community and collaborative partnerships 

  • Strong communication (writing, oral) and project management skills (multitasking) 

  • Experience publishing peer-review publications and technical reports 

  • Authentic commitment to relationship building including engaging with local farming and Indigenous communities in non-technical communications  

  • Openness to listen, mentor and learn in a dynamic interdisciplinary environment 

This 18-month position can begin in early 2023 and due to the lab-centered nature of the position must take place in Windsor, Ontario with willingness to travel to Bioline’s head office near London, Ontario. The position offers a stipend of $55,000 CAD/year including some assistance with relocation costs.
