Welcome to our very first week of Invert Tuesdays!
Every Tuesday we will post an interesting fact about the different types of macroinvertebrates that are found in the bottom of local streams.
For today, we look at the Order Odonata, better known as the dragonflies and damselflies!
Did you know
That Odonates have really unique mouth parts? When feeding, the bottom part of their mouth (called the labium) shoots outwards in front of them, grabbing onto their prey with specially designed hooks, and bringing it back into their mouths. It’s like using an arm to grab the food to pull it back in, but on their face! How neat is that!? Stay tuned for the next Invert Tuesday to see what we learn next!
